The NEW SKILL CENTRE Woodworking section is the ‘activity hub’ for any creation that can be made from wood – if you can dream it we can support you to make it!

Every item is bespoke to the individual who makes it, maybe from an idea or inspiration, maybe triggering a memory or creating a new gadget, anything is possible.

If the ideas aren’t flowing but you fancy woodwork, we have templates and drawings to get you started, and our friendly, experienced staff will support and guide you through your project.

WOODWORK

Most customers who come to us have not made things from wood before, so we support, encourage and guide individuals how to make a project of their choice. This can range from a bird box to a garden bench.

Working with natural materials is great therapy and encourages creativity whilst building self-esteem and confidence.

So come along and have a go! No previous experience needed, just a willing attitude!

COOKING

Our cookery sessions are fun and educational! It’s not all about the cookery – it encourages learning life skills and developing healthy eating practices, but also boosts communication and social skills.

With fun dishes and good staple meals the cookery sessions are popular with all that attend the Centre.

Take home the delicious meal or dessert you have created to share with loved ones or friends, or just sit and devour it all yourself later in front of the TV – who needs take out?!

We are always looking for new ideas of things to cook so please bring along your favourite recipes to share and let’s explore the exciting food from around the world!

We have lots of fun with our cookery sessions here at the New Skill Centre, we cook everything from healthy meals to cakes and international cuisine.

ART & DESIGN

Do you have ideas for things to make in your home or garden? Well we can support and teach you to turn these ideas into a reality.

Do you want to express yourself with painting or art?

We have lots of pre planned projects but we are always open to your ideas. No matter how big or small your ideas are, we can find a way to support you to achieve them. From bespoke Rabbit houses, to unique canvasses and lighting, anything is possible.

In these sessions we explore colours and textures, possibly looking at how we can change the environment around us to be as we want! Creating unique gifts and exploring what helps to make us personally feel good!

04.

HORTICULTURE

Welcome aboard the Blooming Tasty project! Our fantastic small holding growing flowers, fruit and vegetables. Being part of this project gives you the chance to learn how to grow different produce and sample its tastes!

We work on the earth to plate philosophy, growing tasty healthy items and learning how to cook them and make preserves and chutneys, amongst many other things.

It’s also great for the fitness and wellbeing so many of our members like to combine a day on the project with others days indoors.

05.

CRAFTS

Welcome to the world of creativity, we recycle and use materials to make some wonderful collages, plant holders, basket making and many, many, more things. In fact if you can imagine it we can make it.

Our crafts are displayed in many different exhibitions across Suffolk, giving a great sense of purpose and pride for the individuals that make it.

It’s more than just crafts its communication, dexterity, team work and social skills, all of which is encouraged within the group.

06.

TEXTILES

Maybe making fancy cushions or clothing, collages or tie dye, knitting or crocheting, sewing or embroidering, lots and lots of options for you to consider. What do you fancy making, it’s all possible?

We have lots of ideas with textiles, it’s not just the making of an item but understanding where the fabric comes from, and if manmade how they get made.

We also use the sewing machines to support and explore things that each person wants to make.

This can be offered as a non-accredited course or a fun activity.

POTTERY

Do you fancy the challenge of the potter’s wheel! Or maybe hand sculpture?

Lots of exciting things to make and design, creating your own master piece, painting your own ceramic piece in your colours and patterns. Maybe you want to make a model or create a stop motion movie, by combining the making with animation.

This can be offered as a non-accredited course or a fun activity.

FLORISTRY

Do you fancy creating beautiful headbands or flower displays? Maybe drying flowers and creating collages? All of this is possible at NEW SKILL CENTRE.

All we need is your ideas, and we can support you to make some beautiful creations. We use both silk and fresh flowers.

This can be offered as a non-accredited course or a fun activity.

IT

Want to learn how to use computer packages, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Photoshop? If so we can help.

We offer a bespoke package of support to assist you in learning the software that supports you. Whether that is a communication package on a tablet or understanding your laptop or computer, to creating animation, we can assist.

This can be offered as a non-accredited course or a learning activity. We offer ASDAN accredited qualifications.

We run a monthly Newsletter for all of our clients, which showcases the work we all do!, we have exciting themes every month so we showcase peoples work and do a little but about what is coming next month with activities and outings, etc.

Our newsletter is created by our customers who create articles they want to read and share. This is great as we get to learn about what our customers want and individual learn some new IT skills.

10.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Enter the world of Stop Motion, or Animation and create short films, or comic strips to entertain people.

Maybe you could create stories and articles ready for local news letters and newspapers.

We offer media and creative writing combined with animation and art to achieve what an individual wants. All of the articles and animation produced go into our quarterly newsletters and we try where possible to promote them through local media channels (if the individual requires).

11.

MEDIA & ANIMATION

Do you fancy taking beautiful images or creating fun pictures from existing images. If you do then this is the session for you.

Our photography tutor can support you to learn all about your camera or if you want to learn before you purchase we can use our cameras to help support you to do this.

We also support you with the photographic packages such as Photoshop to be able to do some fun crazy things with you photos.

12.

UP-CYCLING

Do you like bringing old items up to date with makeover? If so this is the activity for you. Create stunning new designs on old items giving them a real quirky twist which is all your own.

We have lots of items to up cycle which we then donate or sell to other individuals to create funds to support this project. However we are always open to members bringing in their own items and working on them in here.

This can be part of a non-accredited course or a fun activity.

13.

SPORTS & FITNESS

Do you have a passion for sport and games? If so then this activity is right up your street!

We have a fun Thursday afternoon session with all types of sports and games, there is something for everyone. It includes Archery, Golf, Football, Tennis, Curling plus many, many, more

We also offer supported swimming on a Tuesday morning, for anyone fancying a swim!

Our ‘Green Fitness’ sessions are also held at our Blooming Tasty Project, offering fresh air and fitness in abundance, Monday to Friday weekly. We will help you get active in a fun rewarding way.

14.

GAMING

We have a great demand for these activities!

Our X-Box gaming club is a fun competitive area where all gamers can talk strategy or enjoy the playing of the game. We operate this on hourly sessions so that we all get active as well and incorporate some active game play. So we aren’t glued to the screen!

We actively encourage individuals to create their own gaming ideas as well, away from the screen, and as such play more traditional games which get communication and social skills working well!

15.

BEAUTY

We have a friendly qualified beautician who comes to the Centre on a Friday offering treatments and some pampering. We have a list of what’s on offer but they include, hand massage, shoulder massage, pedicures, manicures, hand massage, plus many, many, more.

COMMUNITY PROJECTS

Do you know of a project in your community? For example is there a garden with a nice bench needed in your local area? Would you like to be able to have an outdoor space which everyone can enjoy?

If this is the case we can support individuals to create this space (in line with permissions).

We run projects in the community to support individuals to help themselves. It may be a garden in a care setting on supported living, no matter where it is if permissions are granted we can help support this.

17.

METAL WORK

We are currently in the process of building our forge so we can create exciting designs with metal.

The Forge will be built for individuals to work and create exciting items of their own design under the close supervision of our tutor and mentor. Maybe a beautiful candle holder or metal sculpture anything is possible.

This can be part of a non-accredited course or a fun activity.

18.

SKILLS FOR TRADE

Do you fancy doing some building work, maybe bricklaying, woodwork and metalwork? If so we offer sessions teaching you the basics of the skills to see if this is something for the future.

We work with partner organisations to deliver this course and as such offer accredited and non-accredited courses.

HEALTHY LIVING

Healthy living has become a bit of a phrase everyone uses but what does it mean?

Lots of people talk to us about what healthy is and what it looks like. We get practical and active and learn how we can be really heathy with food, exercise, friendships and relationships.

We look at all different ways we can stay healthy and safe.

The fun sessions are really practical and engaging and incorporate everyday living.

DAYS OUT

We organise fun days out with our members throughout the year, these can be local or further afield such as London etc.  Call us as we can put together a trip anywhere even abroad if required! We tailor our services to you!

TRIPS

We run several trips throughout the year with the focus being fun and more fun and independence and more fun!

We often run trips to London, Colchester Zoo, Norfolk Broad’s plus many more places all of which are informed by our customers.

We also offer Swimming, Gymnastics, Sports, Line Dancing, Horse-Riding and Carriage driving weekly to name some of our additional outings and activities

CLUBS

We hold our club nights on a Tuesday evening at NEW SKILL CENTRE, refreshments and snacks are sold however people can bring their own food or their own consumption if required.

We all enjoy a good chat and a maybe a film, our social club meets once a week on a Monday evening offering the chance for a good natter and a chance to catch up.

Learn how to make money in fun ways and balance the profit sheet. Great for anyone who is interested in setting up a business for themselves or thinking of finding out how the business world works. Meet some local business people who can tell you about working and what you need to be successful.

For all those budding actors, singers, actresses, come along to entertain friends and other fellow thespians. This group is run by our creative worker who supports with acting, drama, singing and dancing.

Need a place to relax, talk and make new friends whilst making wooden products. This group is run by a male lead and is designed for guys to chat and share issues around a whole range of topics and issues (if you want to!)

STROKE CLUB

Our Stroke club runs every Tuesday 10.30am to 12 noon. It is run by individuals who have experienced a stroke and who understand how difficult things can be. They want to join in with the community and be able to enjoy fun activities and support others. It is a fun energising place full of laughter and chat!

The session is run as a club, with general knowledge quizzes, fun games plus tea and coffee but it is flexible to the needs of the individuals within it.

ACCREDITED QUALIFICATIONS

Do you want to combine a qualification with your time at the New Skill Centre? We offer ASDAN qualifications to support activities run within the New Skill Centre. We can offer qualifications in numerous areas, all accredited through ASDAN. Our members love the sense of achievement combining their activity with a qualification.

We offer qualifications in most subjects from Creative Writing, IT, Relationships, Health and Hygiene, Healthy Eating, moving to and living independently, to Skills for Trade plus many more, if you have an interest we can normally find a qualification to fit this. We have tutors on site as well as support workers who can teach and support in a number of areas.

OUTREACH WORK

We offer community support so we can support you in the community doing whatever activity you choose. We have had fun on cinema trips during, day’s evenings and weekends as well as weekends away and supporting on your holidays.

MODEL MAKING

Who loves a good game of Warhammer or model making with model kits, painting and decorating then playing games and completing challenges? We love model making and encourage people to try making their own models and then using stop motion to create a film.
